Turning Wood For The Mangled Headstock

If your headstock looks like this, it's probably an indication that something's gone wrong along the way.

It's not pretty

Turning some maple so it's round (and the right size for the holes). I've no idea why that nut's there.

The previous owner of this bass had left the current owner with some very badly fitting tuners. There was a heap of wood gouged out to try fit some locating keys on a set of tuners and the shaft holes had been badly enlarged and were weird egg shapes (as well as being a poor fit for the tuner bushings).

After I'd trued up the shaft holes, they were far too big. The solution was to turn down a square-cut piece of maple in a lathe until it was a nice, snug fit for my round hole.

That's how you fit a square peg in a round hole.

Now to drill a correctly sized hole for the tuner shafts.

Haze Blue Collar On Sale

Blue Collar Guitar

Oh, man, you're gonna love this. Not content with offering half-price setups all this month but I can now announce the Haze Blue Collar will be on sale all through January too.

Any orders* for a Blue Collar build, placed in January, will be at the ridiculously low price of €950.

€950 for a hand-built Haze Blue Collar guitar.

When you place an order, you only pay a deposit of €350 with the balance payable when the guitar is completed. That's gotta be good news for your post-Christmas wallet.

Pretty cool, eh?

The Blue Collar

Stripped-back brilliance. That's what you get with a Haze Blue Collar. It's built to play, and play hard. A slab-body and a single pickup gets you to the music with the minimum of fuss. And, damn, this pickup can growl, howl and sing. It's a Duesenberg Domino—a fantastic P-90 style pickup with all of the tone and edge you'd expect.

Here, though, that P-90 sound is coupled to an ash body and a 25.5"-scale maple neck so the Blue Collar doesn't lose focus or get muddy. It keeps its composure when others turn to mush. This makes it one tough little bruiser with a lot more versatility than you'd expect.

Blue Collar playability is something else. An oil and wax finish plays fast and slick and easy while the neck-carve (my own secret-sauce shaping) gives you one of the most comfortable handfuls you've ever played.

If you'd like to have a go on a Blue Collar to feel how great it plays and hear how great it sounds, pop into Some Neck Guitars on Aungier Street in Dublin. You can try out a Blue Collar there from Monday (and I'll begrudgingly tell you that there are usually a LOT of other tasty guitars there too—it's a place you really should check out).

How can I avail of this astounding value?

Good question.

To get your guitar-playing mitts on your very own Blue Collar, just drop me a line and we'll get the ball rolling.

Seriously? €950. You'd be mad not to.

Birth of Burlesque

The Haze Burlesque has been revealed. This probably means the teasing images of the build process aren't really needed anymore.

However, I quite like them, so I'm keeping them around (I hope you like them too). Here you go, then: a photo-journal of the birth of Burlesque.

The Burlesque Revealed

Haze Burlesque

The teasing is over, ladies and gentlemen. Step right up and allow me to introduce the Haze Burlesque.

The Burlesque is a brand new model from Haze Guitars.

And it's pretty stunning. A figured-wood top and a curvy, mahogany body give an irresistible look, but the Burlesque's beauty is more than skin-deep. The two humbucker pickups are wound to vintage PAF specs for a sweet, classic sound. Their smooth tones coupled with a wraparound bridge mean the Burlesque can sustain all night.

A 630mm scale-length and twenty-two, gold EVO frets—along with a wonderful, bend-friendly setup—make the Burlesque something you won't want to keep your hands off.

A volume for each pickup, a master tone and a three-way toggle control things. Gotoh 510 tuners and a bone nut with straight string-pull keep the tuning solid.

Sweet tones, wrapped in a beautiful package. Be seduced by the Burlesque.

And remember, all this week you can tune in to Radio Nova to learn how to win your very own Haze Burlesque. There are some more images on Facebook and some more will be added over the next few days so pop over and Like Haze Guitars to keep abreast (ahem).
